The candy jar at the lower right was a familiar fixture on Mrs. Warwick's desk. Student visitors to her office were rewarded for achievement or good citizenship with a dip into the candy jar before departing.
In a nod to trompe l'oeil the candy jar and hand overlap a gold band around the edge of the painting. When the portrait is viewed in its frame, the gold band appears to be a part of the frame and the hand and jar establish a presence forward of the setting of Mrs. Warwick's office.
